Insect of the day: no idea what this is; don’t believe I’ve ever seen one before. This one was on a maple sapling along the #appalachiantrail in SW Virginia between Route 611 and Route 608. Any ideas? It’s a little bigger than a common ladybug. #insects #identification #entomology #at2015

  1. Kurt: You continue the tradition of Earl Victor Shaffer (1918-2002), the first known hiker to walk the entire Appalachian Trail. The State Library of Pennsylvania recently acquired his new biography published by the Appalachian Trail Museum. It is entitled A Grip on the Mane of Life (2014). I am proud of you. Keep up the good work. –Tom Duszak

    1. Earl was the first to walk the entire Trail end-to-end in one sustained effort. Thanks, Tom, for reading the blog and making the connection to the biography of this fine Pennsylvanian (which I plan to read after I get home this fall).
