    1. Actually it’s a little faster than I thought I’d start out at. Quite a number of people have commented that I’m setting a good pace. A “Ridgerunner” (Trail volunteer who spends the summer hiking back and forth in one section, picking up trash, answering questions, helping out in general) said I’m “really picking them up and putting them down”. We agreed that it makes a difference when one doesn’t (as a lot of the younger hikers do) sleep in late, start late, stop early, stop at every hostel, take long breaks several times during the day. I get up with the birds. Mostly have been stopping for the night around 6:00 or so when I see two trees the right distance apart … rather than stopping 4 miles earlier simply because there was a shelter.

Also my pack is lighter than lots of other people are carrying. I started with 28 pounds. I’ve heard other people saying they are carrying 45; or that they’re going to buy a new, lighter tent and get their weight down to 39 pounds or something. That much weight would slow me down, too.
