Belated footnote re “Trail Names” – your grandmother Retelsdorf grew up just outside Luebeck, GE – a city founded in the 12th century. Despite its humble beginnings the city became a major commercial power best remembered as the “Queen of the Hanseatic League.” Wealth and prestige prompted the city fathers to build extensive fortifications, including the HOLSTENTOR, now a must-see historical site for visitors from around the world. Above the passage leading into town one can read, in huge gold lettering the city’s motto: CONCORDIA DOMIS FORIS PAX (Harmony within, Peace without), said to have been posted the around 1870. Your grandma must have seen in may times, perhaps on the way to school. So then, for me your nickname on the trail evokes more than a fading memory of few Latin words and phrases.
